03/08/2007 - Destroying Ginger!
Well, today we got up at the usual time, and had breakfast and got ready for our day out doing service. It was a short drive until we got there, but as usual, we passed the sea (as it is only just down the road from where we are staying), and we could tell that it was going to be a beautiful day as the sun shone down on us.
When we got there, we were taken on a short tour around part of a forest, which was really breathtaking and quite interesting. You imagine that you would only see forests like that on TV - not in real life!
Anway, after that short little tour, we were split into 2 groups (our minibus groups which we had travelled in), and for the morning were set different tasks. The 1st group had the job of pulling up the banana passionfruit and privet, as it was apparantly nice, but destroyed their native plants there. The second group were split into 2 different groups again (the boys vs. the girls!). For the morning, the boys had to clear ginger plants, and the girls had to cut up privet - which was harder than it actually sounds! However, a quote from JM and JH said 'the girls definitely had the easier job! - but I tend to disagree!
At 1pm, we stopped for lunch, and went into Russell, the local town nearby. We ate our packed lunch, and bought definite must haves - i.e. coke, sweets etc.! We stopped for lunch for about 1 and a half hours, which was a nice time to recover!
However, after that time, we were back to work, but this time all working on the ginger. We had a nice little rota going - with some people cutting the ginger down with machetes, some people piling the ginger onto the people who took them down to the pile of ginger, with some people standing on the top of the pile making sure that none of the ginger went on the path. Those people had a shock though when CMJ was accidentally put on the pile - when people mistook his ginger hair!
Some people cleared the ginger for about 1 hour, and then went off to help set up an exhibition for the locals. Although, when the remainding group had finished the ginger and had also gone off to help as well, they found that the 1st exhibition group hadn't been needed - so they had just had free time! But the people then arrived as the 2nd exhibtion group got there, the people who wanted us to help set up arrived - so we all helped set up for about 45 minutes.
And that was the whole day summed up really, apart from the people who went shopping for tea that night - but that is a different story!!
