Buckingham, Winslow and District Explorer Scouts Spain Trip 2003
We stayed in a place called Griebal a few Miles outside, Ainsa in Northern Spain about 3 hours drive from BarcelonaGriebal is actually an old Spanish village but when the reservoir was created in the valley below the town, and all the Farm land was under water the village was slowly abandoned.
In 1990 the town of Griebal and the surrounding 700 hectares was given to the Local Scout Region with the Proviso that the area would become center of services for the young people of the region/Spain and the whole of Europe.
Since 1990 volunteers have completed the reconstruction of the main area of Greibal and work has begun on converting one of the derelict Farm houses into a conference centre.
Griebal is not the easiest place to get to
Instructions from Ainsa
- Leave Ainsa on the the road to Campo
- Follow the Road until you can see the river on your right
- Turn Right into the next layby
- Drive down the layby and follow it round to the left
- At the River ! - Drive straight on (We found that if you drive on the right it's about 15cm Deep, someplaces on the left are about 45cm deep)
- At the other side of the river Do not follow the sign pointing left to Griebal, it's for walkers
- Turn right and head up the gravel track
- Follow the switch backs (We found 1st is the best gear after the 1st bend)
- As the track turns from gravel to rock track remember to grip the steering wheel tightly. (It's a very long way down to your left)
- Just as you are begining to think you are not going to get to the top you will hit tarmac and your at Griebal.
